Passive Electronic Devices: A Beginner’s Guide

Passive Electronic Devices: A Beginner’s Guide

Passive devices are known to be the back bone of electronic circuits. Electronic circuits will not work without these devices. Some of the most common examples of passive devices include capacitors, Resistors, inductors, Transformers for building electronic circuits. These devices do not require electrical power for functioning.

Passive devices do not posses directionality or gain. This is the reason that they are unable to generate, Amplify or oscillate a signal. Passive devices required to be connected together in a circuit. This is either in parallel or series combination to control complex circuits or signals.

These devices tend to consume power. This makes them similar to attenuators unlike active elements that generate power towards a circuit.

Passive devices are usually known as electrical elements when it comes to electrical circuit theory and circuit analysis.

• Resistance: This is a basic passive component that restricts the electrical current through it. The opposition amount towards the current flow is refined to as resistor resistance. It is denoted by the symbol ‘R’.

• Inductance: This is denoted by the symbol ‘L’. It is measured in henries (H). It is also the element widely utilized for the purpose of storage of energy in the form of electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field is stored in the turns of a coil. Self induction is the inductor property that opposes changes in the current. An inductor can also be referred to as another passive device that helps in delivering or storing energy. However, it cannot generate.

• Capacitance: This is a passive device. It is quite different from the inductor as it stores energy in electrostatic manner in the form of change across its plates. A capacitor comprises of two conducting plates. These plates are separated by a dielectric material capacitance is dented as C. It is the property of a capacitor that opposes any changes available in the voltage across. Capacitors offer a low impedance path to signals of AC. It works towards blocking DC. The impedance of a capacitor is known as capacitive reactance. It tends to vary with frequency. The AC voltage since wave in an ideal capacitor lags the current by 90o. It will also hold positive value just like resistance.
